(Moth)
(Scorpioid Blood Siphon)
(Ancient Dragonfly)
(Tormentor)
1. What Is This Mod?
Many players hearing the name "Bug Plague" for the first time may think it is an event or a small update. In fact, it is a famous horror apocalyptic survival mod for Minecraft Java Edition. Its full official name is Arthropod Phobia Expansions. Players in China usually call it Bug Plague for short, and some also refer to it as Ultimate Arthropod Phobia.
This mod falls into the same category as well-known mods such as The Conjurer (Distortion) and Mycelium Plague. It focuses on high difficulty and intense pressure, with gameplay similar to zombie siege survival. Still, Bug Plague has its own distinct feature: the invasion of giant arthropods. Once installed, your peaceful block world will be overrun by swarms of bugs. Instead of regular zombies and skeletons, you will face flying, burrowing, blood-sucking, splitting creatures that can even summon reinforcements. The tension and sense of danger are far stronger than vanilla Minecraft.
Its most popular version is Forge for 1.20.1, with common builds such as 5.0.2. The learning curve is gentle. Veteran players familiar with basic Minecraft survival can jump right in and experience the terrifying feeling that bugs are everywhere and you dare not step outside your base.
2. Origin of the Mod Name
The Chinese nickname "Bug Plague" naturally comes from its gameplay and content. The word "Arthropod" in its English name refers to creatures like insects, spiders and scorpions. The creator’s original goal was to let players experience the despairing, hardcore feeling of a world ruled by giant arthropods.
If you watch 100-day survival playthroughs of Bug Plague from content creators, you will notice most of them say the same thing: this mod is brutal. Unlike many mods that merely add a handful of new mobs, it completely reshapes the survival pace of a playthrough. Early on you can barely hold your ground. As the game goes on, bugs start assembling in massive groups. In the late game, they fill the skies, crawl across the ground and burrow underground. You must craft better gear, build fortifications, or even retreat into secure bunkers to stay alive.
3. Mob Roster of Bug Plague (Key Section)
This is the core of Bug Plague and what players love and fear the most. The mod features a complete ecosystem of bug enemies, each with unique attacks, behaviours and appearances. I will break them down one by one.
1. Moth (Spider Moth)
This is the most common flying enemy in the early game. Its design blends a spider and a moth, with a horrifying wingspan. Its defining trait is that it actively chases you at decent speed, and its attacks drain your health. With poor early-game gear, even a single Moth can force you to run. It is many players’ first nightmare and the mod’s harsh welcome.
2. Scorpioid Blood Siphon
Its intimidating name matches its threat level. It is a giant scorpion-like creature with agile movement and the ability to spit fireballs from long range. To make things worse, when brought to low health, it splits into copies of itself, multiplying your troubles. It can also gain resistance buffs, making your attacks far less effective. This combination of splitting at low health, ranged damage and self-buffs makes it one of the hardest mid-game opponents.
3. Ancient Dragonfly
Its name alone carries a strong sense of menace. This enormous prehistoric dragonfly is one of the deadliest mid-to-late game mobs. Its signature ability is throwing Void Spears, special projectiles that ignore armour, meaning heavy armour will not save you from its hits. It can also split into duplicates and heal itself by draining your health when it lands hits. You cannot win by brute force alone against an Ancient Dragonfly. You have to dodge its attacks, keep your distance and strike during openings. It is a skill check for players.
4. Termites & Termite Nests
Flying bugs are not your only threat. The ground holds dangers too. The mod adds fully realised Termite Nest ruins filled with Termite mobs. These nests act like small dungeons with entrances, corridors and chambers. You can loot them like a dungeon run. Termite Nests are both a major threat and a valuable source of loot and crafting materials. Great rewards await those brave enough to enter — if they make it out alive.
5. Final Boss: Tormentor
The grand finale of Bug Plague and its hardest challenge. The Tormentor is colossal, with massive health and devastating attacks. It combines nearly every dangerous mechanic from the mod: ranged strikes, melee swipes, summons and self-enhancement. Many players are intimidated just by its size on first sight. To defeat it, you will need max-tier gear, plenty of supplies, good positioning and calm tactics. One mistake can get you one-shot. Beating the Tormentor is the "final exam" of the mod; your Bug Plague run is not truly completed until you defeat it.
4. Exclusive Dimension: The Arthropod Realm
Bug Plague would not be complete if bugs only spawned in the Overworld. The real highlight is its custom dimension, the Arthropod Realm. Players locate altar-like central structures and activate them (usually via sacrifice) to open a portal to this realm. It is a fully separate, self-contained otherworld split into four layers, each more dangerous and populated by stronger mobs than the last. The Arthropod Realm has its own atmosphere, terrain and escalating swarms.
Deeper layers bring you closer to the heart of the plague, where you may encounter top-tier threats such as the Tormentor. Many players set reaching the fourth layer of the Arthropod Realm as their main goal. It is the best place to farm rare materials and powerful loot, and the essential path to endgame progression.
5. Gameplay & Core Experience
This mod is more than just extra monsters. It builds a full apocalyptic survival loop. I will break down its core experience: Early Game: Survive and Lay Low. Bugs become active right as your world starts. Your priority is not exploration, but quickly building a shelter that can keep bugs out, gathering basic resources, and crafting simple weapons and armour. The theme of this phase is simple: hide and survive.
Mid Game: Fight and Fortify. As days pass, you will encounter more varieties of stronger bugs. You need to upgrade your equipment and start building defences: walls, traps, lighting (bugs are more active in darkness), and even simple automated defences. This is the most engaging phase. You constantly balance risk: leaving your base to gather resources, or staying home to defend it.
Late Game: Hardcore Assaults. In the endgame, bug swarms turn feral and fill the skies and land. Simple base defence is no longer enough. You must take the fight to them: clear nests, farm the Arthropod Realm for materials, and challenge the Tormentor. The fun of late game comes from your growth — shifting from being hunted by bugs, to hunting them yourself.
